PRK vs Lasik Eye Surgery? I went with PRK

Contact us to Add Your Hospital

After 15 years of thinking about getting corrective laser eye surgery, I went for it! This video documents my before and after experience with PRK. I was 20 50 before the surgery, now I'm a perfect 20 20! But…I definitely lost some of my near vision. The recovery was up and down, days 3 and 4 were the most uncomfortable. After 2 weeks, my eyes took a turn for the worse because of a reaction to some eye drops that I bought in Canada (they had preservatives, and my eyes didn't like that). At 5 weeks, (the time of posting this video) my sight is pretty darn amazing.

Awesome!! I’ve considered some type of laser myself. I’ve worn extended wear contacts for about 30 years now and quite frankly they’ve done so well for me that I haven’t tipped over the edge into laser surgery. But I do know the feeling of, “Oh look, there’s leaves on those trees”, LOL. It is SO amazing when you can finally see clearly and notice all the details that you’ve been missing!

I am happy for you. I had mine done (Lasik) about 20 years ago. I was like 20-400 (super near sided) before. Could not see anything twelve inches in front of my face. Think that twilight zone episode where they guy at the end of the world is going to read all the books and breaks his glasses. I had nightmares about loosing or breaking my glasses. I ended up like 20-30. About 10 years on I noticed that my eyes changed a little to the point that I now wear glasses and contacts to get the crisp-ness back. I could go without them, but it is better with. The only bad thing that happened was I ended up with one eye that is slightly not perfectly curved which makes wearing a contact sometimes frustrating. I am told PRK would not have done that. Hands down the best personal improvement I have done for myself though. I would do it all over again in the blink of an eye. 😉

You are so much like me, it’s almost scary. I went in for Lasik and they switched one eye over to PRK mid surgery. I’m on day 2 and things are, let’s just say interesting. Thanks for posting the longer term video explaining what’s coming. I didn’t do much research on PRK since I was supposed to get Lasik on both eyes. This was very helpful. I too had to give up some of my close up vision (I’m 48) but I can still see my Apple watch for the most part and it should get a little better once my eyes heal some more. Awesome video!!!

Awesome. I just had PRK a week ago and after wearing glasses for 30 years I am excited to run a trail without tripping because I can not wear glasses running. Thanks for the uplifting video.

Once you heal after about a 6 weeks, you’ll be like “Why didn’t I do it sooner?” Great journey my friend, your vision will vary for the first month, once you heal it’ll stabilize.

@Muahammad WAQAR So it’s been 321 days so far so almost an entire year. My right eye is doing amazing (at this time at least and for the last several weeks). My left eye is a little better. Still experiencing overall blurriness and double vision on lights and bright objects unfortunately. But I am able to read about 20/30 in my left eye even with all the blurriness and double vision. My eye doctor said since I am able to read as well as I can he doesn’t want to do any sort of touch up surgery and wants to see if over time it will catch up to my right eye. It’s definitely frustrating but I am only hoping it eventually catches up cause I am still unhappy overall with it.

I have double vision also and it can be very annoying mostly when I drive, you can get this thing called a “prism” a prism is a sticker on the inside of your classes that correct double vision, I wear one par of glasses when I drive an another for up close, you should look into it

Great video, Investing time and money into yourself is always a good thing! With your improved vision and your love of the night skies, you may want to learn the night skies! Keep looking up!

I’ve had the surgery twice. First time 1998 and again in 2000. I am now wearing glasses to drive and could have another enhancement but that would prevent me from seeing my watch. Remember, your eyes continue to grow and change shape, making your eyesight change.

Hello friends! This is a different type of adventure video, an EYE adventure! Have any of you had laser eye surgery? Or considering getting it? I hope this video helps explain what it’s all about. SEE you all down the road.

@Tomas K. How bad did it hurt? I know one person who has excruciating pain, and another person who also said they had bad pain, but they didn’t quite call it “excruciating”. I’m supposed to get it this week, and I’m starting to freak out.

  9. Kent Cruse

I’m glad your surgery went well! I have worn glasses since I was 6. 51 years now. I considered lasic a while back but the part about my eyes possibly getting worse along with the fact that I may have to still wear glasses anyway caused me to chicken out! Please wear your readers more often in your videos! Embrace getting older! Ha!

I got PRK as well! It’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I also got it done almost 10 years ago and it hasn’t worn off at all the entire time. It’s been great. The recovery, however, was not fun. I didn’t open my eyes for 2-3 days after the surgery. I just tried to sleep solely to pass the time haha wait until about 3 weeks has gone by and you’ll notice how much better they’ve gotten.

  11. Allan Jones

Your best video ever!  As for me, I would consider it if it resulted in permanent improvement, but it sounds like most people have to wear glasses later anyway, or go in and have it done again.

@lpmedvaljr.16 Pretty much last update. Contacts came out Friday which got rid of some irritation. Was able to drive Saturday (slight irritation early in the day even with sunglasses but passed later on when I went back out and was able to drive at night no glare), watched TV, played some games, etc. I did feel like I tired my eyes out a bit though. My eyes weren’t very dry either (never felt need for eye drops but used occasionally just in case). My vision was still a bit blurry for text on my PC but I could read it. Today my eyes felt great, I can read easier on PC (still not perfect) but I played games for almost 2 hours with no irritation and my eyes never felt tired. Overall great recovery and not regretting PRK at all.

    2. Gene Anthony

@lpmedvaljr.16 quite. This video helped though since he had similar issues. Right now I’m just waiting to get these contacts out. Meeting doctor in about 45 minutes. Hard to keep eyes open for long time contacts start annoying me

    3. Gene Anthony

@lpmedvaljr.16 heads up Yesterday was 2nd day after surgery and my eyes watered for almost 3 hours while it felt like I had a bad contact in. My eyes went to crap and everything was blurry. Today eyes are a little better but still not great. Went to doctor yesterday and said I was 75% healed. Today I probably get the contact out which is uncomfortable if everything healed.
