Airline Reporter visits the new Orbis MD-10 Flying Eye Hospital, which launched on June 2, 2016 to replace their DC-10, retired after 22 years of service.
A one-of-a-kind aircraft that flies around the world to help improve the lives of adults and children in underserved communities as well as train local doctors and staff in life-changing eye treatment techniques.
The MD-10-30F was donated, updated, and upgraded by FedEx. It has a range of 6,000nm, and can remain airborne for 11 hours. Thanks to the new avionics, only 2 flight deck crew are needed. The passenger compartment (which doubles as a classroom on the ground) can carry up to 46 passengers.
The hospital itself is a series of modules designed to fit into the upper cargo hold of the MD-10. On the lower cargo deck, there are a few workstations and space for storage generators, water purifiers, and other equipment.
